Hair Loss Causes

Image
When you start to lose your hair it can be scary, not knowing what is causing it, or if it will ever grow back. At Hans Wiemann we take the time to magnify your hair and scalp to help determine exactly what is causing your hair loss to give you the best possible solution for restoring it, Hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors. The most common is hereditary hair loss, normally called male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. Heredity can determine what age hair loss starts and its extent. Although, it’s the most common, heredity is not the only cause of hair loss. Some of the others are: alopecia, chemotherapy, stress and trauma, medications and an unbalanced diet.

Alopecia:
Alopecia is an auto-immune disease that affects approximately 2 percent of the world’s population. In people with alopecia, the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss. There are three different types of alopecia; alopecia areata (hair loss in patches), alopecia totalis (loss of all hair on scalp) and alopecia universalis (loss of all hair on body). Men and women are equally effected by alopecia and it can occur at any age.

Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy has many unfortunate side-effects including hair loss. Chemotherapy drugs are powerful medications that attack rapidly dividing cells in your body, healthy cells are attacked in addition to cancer cells. Fortunately, hair loss from chemotherapy is usually temporary. Even though losing your hair can be devastating, plan to use your energy staying healthy during this difficult time rather than worrying about how you look. Hans Wiemann offers a wide variety of chemotherapy hair loss treatment options for both men and women.

Stress and Trauma:
It is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Excessive hair shedding is called telogen effluvium, this causes hair to suddenly shift into the shedding phase. It can be caused by a number of stressors like caring for a sick loved one, going through a divorce or losing a job. Telogen effluvium can also be caused by trauma to the body such as malnutrition, infection, surgery and giving birth. Normally your hair will begin to regrow as your body readjusts after the stressor is removed. If the stressor stays with you, however, hair shedding can be long lasting.

Medications:
Hair loss is listed as a side-effect for many medications. Some drugs used to treat arthritis, heart problems, depression, high-blood pressure and even birth control have been attributed to hair loss. Also, too much vitamin A can cause hair loss. Medications like topical retinoids used to treat acne and other skin conditions combined with taking vitamin A supplements can cause hair loss. Luckily, once the body stops getting too much vitamin A normal hair growth resumes.

Unbalanced Diet:
Having an unbalanced diet can be a cause of hair loss as well. Crash diets that greatly limit the foods you eat can leave your body deficient in certain nutrients. It is much healthier for both your hair and body to eat a well-balanced diet of complex carbohydrates, fats, fiber and protein.
